I think that your case study will develop his geeking out skills as he gets older. He is beginning to with the need to play facebook games and then post the scores to brag. He seems like a really nice young man that is trying to work his way through some tough times.
Classroom teachers would benefit from offering geeking out sessions. This would encurage creative ideas out of young students. They could work on webquests or thinkquests.
I think you make a good point about hand-eye coordination from playing video games. Playing games with Wii contribute to a virtual experience through simulation which helps to learn without fear of failure. This is a great way practice sports in your living room!
Great story, and it's so sad that there aren't enough computers for all students. Though, we do have to get creative as teachers and find a way to work around our limited resources...sad, but true. What a great connection between playing wii and sports. My son has learned a lot of golf statistics, etc... from gaming!
I hate to hear about a lack of computers. It seems as if even a limited number could be utilized! This young man seems to have quite a competitive streak, like some of the others I've read about!I would love to see his love of baseball worked into an assignment!
I agree with you completely that lessons need to be relevant to real life, and I feel that it is so important to the retention of material. Great study.
